January 2009 Heavyweight Rankings

1. Fedor Emelianenko

Fedor once again showed his supremacy with the 36 second demolition of former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, becoming newly founded WAMMA's first champion. Fedor looks to further his reign with the chalenge of yet another former UFC champion, Andrei Arlovski, in Affliction's second event.

2. Andrei Arlovski

Coming from knockouts of former IFL superstars Ben Rothwell and Roy Nelson, Arlovski proved himself despite being outside the realm of UFC competition. With the upcoming bout with Fedor Emelianenko, he will have an opportunity to victor the heavyweight division's most dominant champion.

3. Frank Mir

Coming from one of the most technical performances of his career, Mir proved to the doubtful world that he could and would be the first to put Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to sleep. Frank Mir has proven himself the number 1 heavyweight in the UFC with victories over Lesnar, Nogueira, and Antonio Hardonk in his last three fights. A rematch with Lesnar will result in the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

4. Josh Barnett

Hoping for a fight with Fedor somewhere down the road, Barnett hopes to end the winning streak of the sporadic Dutch knockout artist, Gilbert Yvel. In a recent interview with HDnet's Inside MMA, Josh said he would fight to make this fight happen, despite Yvel's past behaviors.

5. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Although "Minatauro" fell hard to Frank Mir, his record still remains second to none in the UFC. Unfortunately, Rodrigo showed a very solid technical loss to Mir, expected by very few before the heavyweight tournament. Nogueira has seen better days.

6. Brock Lesnar

Lesnar established himself in the Mixed Martial Arts community with the second round knock out of UFC legend Randy Couture, crowning him the UFC intern heavyweight champion. Although he fell short to Frank Mir in their first meeting, a clear champion will be given in their rematch for the title.

7. Randy Couture

After a long legal battle kept "The Natural" from the octagon for over a year, people were not sure what exactly to expect from their champion. Unfortunately, the belt once held around his waist was stripped when he fell  to UFC newcomer, Brock Lesnar.

8. Tim Sylvia

What is next for Sylvia? No one can say for sure. After an obvious domination by Fedor, there is no clear goal in WAMMA. Rumored to fight with Ken Shamrock, Sylvia cannot find the competition needed for moving up in his career.

9. Alistair Overeem

After a quick tune-up victory for Overeem, a solid performance against "Cro Cop" ending in a no contest, as well as wins against Mark Hunt and Paul Buentello, Alistair Overeem has given a resurgence in his mixed martial arts career. We hope to see Alistair in the UFC sometime soon.

10. Gabriel Gonzaga

With two consecutive 1st round victories against Justin McCully and Josh Hendricks, Gonzaga is slowly beginning to bring it back. We hope the competition heats up for Gonzaga, to see some real action in the Octagon once again.
